Serco Prize 'Secret London'. Jeremy Bentham

The poster illustration of Jeremy Bentham was shortlisted for the Serco Prize 'Secret London' exhibition this year.

Jeremy Bentham the forward thinking philosopher and reformer was a fascinating subject to illustrate.
Read  more about Jeremy Bentham here.

The pen and ink drawings were made on site in front of his cabinet in The Cloisters Building in UCL and whilst having lunch at the Jeremy Bentham public house around the corner in University Street. The drawings were composed and coloured digitally.

BAA Award 2012

Here is the BAA British Animation Awards award I designed this year.

It was presented to the team who made the beautiful digital 3D cut out animation for
The Tale of Three Brothers   from Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows part 1

Animation - Craft and Industry

This is an office  'top drawer' housing a porcelain  figure with plastic sheep. Sheep's wool smoke puffs out of the keys of an antique pottery sheep jelly mould.

This wasn't my first Award design I was lucky enough to be invited to make one in 2004

Bleating Heart

This box is double ended and can be hung both ways. It one bleats when it is turned upside down from two toy bleater boxes.

Bed of Roses

This assemblage was made during a year I spent teaching animation in Stuttgart, Germany. It was a great opportunity and I lived in a castle on a hill for a while;
Called Schloss Solitude.... Say no more!

I made some enduring friendships there though  I remember being very lonely at the time!

There was a very wonderful Christmas market there where, at that time, there was a fabulous wax doll stall where I found this dolls head and hands.

Germany really knows how to do Christmas and dolls!

New Head!

On Friday after my exciting trip up to the 30th floor of Trellick Tower (what a view!)
I found a new head, the largest here, for my small collection of doll heads courtesy of Merlin's stall on the Golborne Road.

The Cabinet of Hands

Many of these hands apart from those of dolls are the hands of Fatima.

My favorite of which is the large wax hand on the top shelf behind the waving plastic ones.
This I purchased in Tavira ,Portugal. It is designed to encourage St Fatima to heal any ills your own hand might have. The trick is to approach the shrine of Fatima on your knees holding out the wax hand before you.

There were many other body parts available fashioned in wax for the same purpose. Feet, breasts, noses etc..

This wonderful store which sold all manner of Catholic statues agreed to sell me all their spare hands. The ones that had fallen of statues of Christ or the saints.

Some of these remain in the cabinet but most became incorporated into a series of Assemblages I made during my visits to Tavira in the mid 90's. Finds from the flotsam and jetsam of Cacela Velha beach also feature.
